Mentorship Exchange on Archival Practices: Engaging the Legacy of Lain Singh Bangdel
Kalā Kulo, in partnership with Asia Art Archive in India, hosted a week-long mentorship program in April 2025. This exchange focused on strategies for scoping, cataloging, digitizing, and activating the family estate of Lain Singh Bangdel (1919–2002), a pioneering modernist artist, novelist, and art historian whose personal archive includes manuscripts, correspondences, photographs, artworks, and rare publications.
A closed-group interaction was held on April 25, bringing together individuals and organizations engaged in diverse archival projects. The session focused on the processes and challenges of building archives in Kathmandu. Noopur Desai (AAA, Delhi), in conversation with Bishal Yonjan (Kalā Kulo, Lalitpur), reflected on the significance of engaging with the recent art histories of South Asia.
This mentorship program is part of the ongoing archive and research initiative, Ephemeral & Enduring: Lain Singh Bangdel and Engaged Collection Care, supported by the Art South Asia Project's Archiving Grant 2024–2025.
