ephemeral & enduring

Ephemeral and Enduring: Lain Singh Bangdel & Engaged Collection Care” is an archive-based research project where we approach the work of archiving as both a creative and critical labor. This involves a sustained effort at moving through a slow and humdrum pace of shifting through stacks of boxes, briefcases, envelops, cupboards, and various reshuffled nooks and crannies of an artist estate.

Over the past year, with the support of ASAP Archiving Grant and in partnership with Bangdel & Shakya family, we have been able to take a deep dive into the life and oeuvre of Lain Sing Bangdel curious to understand the milieu in which he came to encounter modern and contemporary arts. Many questions in our mind, the team at Kalā Kulo were able to encounter Bangdel and his proliferating endeavors in the archive.

This project now is entering another iteration as we share our learning as well as challenges through a series of public events, social media posts, and other longer term programming where our hope is that we can contribute to emerging and urgent conversations regarding artist archives in the global South.
